What is this piece?

Post by Damon23 »

This was under the spring seat on the drivers side. Passenger side did not have one. I was told their was no shims used and that could have a effect on the ride height on the front.

no clue for me. I did not have them when i disassembled the front suspension on my 69. I'm curious myself as to what it's for.

iirc it is to even the side to side level of the front. A spring seat shim.

EDIT: And I have seen several over the years.

So what year trucks had them? I saw a drawing for 65/69 that had that piece, part number 5355, on BOTH sides.

Soooo...now the questions come. If it was for leveling, why does the drawing have them on BOTH sides. I was also told it was for caster and camber adjustments...which I found out is also untrue do to bending the I-beam for both of those adjustments.

I have a 65 F-100 Shortbed Custom Cab and want to know whether these belong on my truck or not. Finally located 2 of them in case.

After I removed mine it dropped the front down almost a inch. I'm still a half inch higher on the drivers side but they are new springs and when I get in on the drivers side I bet it levels out. I'll have to post a picture of my springs cause this piece was under the driver side and that spring is shorter but the truck still sat up a little higher. Maybe it is supposed to be under the passenger side and along the way it was moved.

Maybe they show it for both sides cause it can go on either side?

Well now I am not sure. I shot an email to my old boss/ford suspension guru. Will let you know what he says.

When you measured height both times was it in the same location (ground)? Also, did you settle the suspension with a drive both times before measuring? Can't tell you how many people forget/don't know that it needs to be driven and the suspension cycled for it to settle right.

Drove it around the neighborhood drove in a circle at full lock and made sure I hit the bumps and even made some hard stops. Measured it again in the same spot in the garage and as of this morning it is with a quarter inch of the passenger side. So I don't need that piece.

OK, he said he's not sure why they are there from the factory, but they use them on saggy springs to help bring the camber back some. Maybe some factory setups need them right off the line.

OMG!!! Think I finally found the answer!! What do you guys think?

Also, the Ford part number indicates C5 for 1965 so it looks like its been in use since then. Drawing above indicates 65/69

Nice work. I don't know why mine had one on the drivers side. After new springs it sits pretty level. Guess I'll mold onto in case it settles more and leans.
