Steering coupler question

Post by Salty Dog »

Hello all,

I have a 72 f100, manual steering, 3 speed coloumn shift. I have been trying to replace the rubber disk with doorman HELP steering coupling disc kit. #31000.

Not sure how to get the studds out, or what parts to loosen or take off next?

chunk that came out

I've looked at several threads on here and FTE but not really sure how to proceed. I'm no mechanic btw. More like a graphic artist trying to learn this old pickup as I go.

The usual name for that coupler is rag joint, if you search for that you will find a lot of info.

I'm not meaning this to be rude, there is already info out there and I don't see the need to duplicate it.
... I've got skills, ingenuity and no regard for maintaining any kind of historical preservation/authenticity...

Almost hate to post this cuz it's a chebbie but it's pretty much the same and it's a decent write up. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/show ... 14332After you take the nuts off you have to drive the two studs out with a hammer and punch from the back side. Installation is reverse of disassembly. After you drive the studs back in, "peen" 'em close to the edge, with a hammer and center punch, at least 3-4 places..

So you have to take off the coupler before you drive the studds out or drive them out while it's still on the steering box?

It's a lot easier if you take it off. You might have to grind the ends flush if it's stubborn. The hardest part is putting them back in.

Same process I used on mine a couple weeks ago. No way I could have done it without removing from the steering box shaft first.

Thanks fellas. I did end up sliding the column up to get it off. After that I had to cut and grind off the studds to get them to pop off. Finished the job late satuday night. I appreciate all the useful tips.
