Front Springs Falling Out

Post by Wueras67 »

Hi guys,

I have a 67 f100. I just bought new springs for it. I was doing a test drive yesterday and when I hit a bump the truck started wobbling as if the spring came out of place, then fixed itself after a couple seconds. Is there a bracket of some sort that is supposed to hold the spring in place? I just put it in without bolting it in. If it does have brackets, I don't think mine has them. Also, when I lift the truck on a jack the springs just fall out when I go high enough. Is this normal? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Pics would help too, if possible. THANKS!!! By the way, I also have the Drop Beams on it by JDM.

Should have a retainer on top and a big washer, inside the.spring on bottom. I'll get you some pics in a little while. Can't get 'em from my phone.

Here's pics. Not sure if the '67 is exactly the same. Mine's a '70 but should be a similar application.

Thanks Randy. I'll have to look for them when I get home tonight. Worse case scenario, I'll have to buy new ones. Any advise on where I could find them? Or what their called?

I believe they're called upper coil spring retainer and lower coil spring retainer. I think I've seen the uppers available somewhere online but my searching, in the past, for the lowers yielded absolutely nothing. Was your spring coming loose at the top or the bottom? If it's at the bottom, something's definitely wrong there. I can see the upper retainer missing more readily than the lower unless somebody's disassembled your I-beams and forgot to put the lowers back on.

That's the problem, when this happened I was driving it so I am not exactly sure if it's from top or bottom. Like I said, it fixed itself and stopped bouncing after about 2 seconds. By the time I pulled over and checked the issue, it was fine. But it felt is if the springs popped out of place and sat back in (after hitting a bump on the road). But I can tell you that nothing (aside from the arm that holds them in place) is holding/bolting the springs on. I just place them in there and lower the truck (off the jack) and that holds them in place. But when I go to lift the truck back up, bam they fall off if I go high enough. Very weird! And unsafe! I'll have to get those retainers for sure.

I am surprised the shocks let the suspension droop that much to free the springs....maybe that's how they did it back in the day and thus the spring retainers are needed? Seems a little odd....

Wow! That's scary. Better get something going quick on that. Here's the closest thing I've found to the upper retainer. http://broncograveyard.com/bronco/i-232 ... upper.html It's for a dent side but might still work. I'm still looking for a lower but haven't found anything yet. Lots of 4x4 stuff out there but they're not the same configuration. Worst case, get some 1/4" flat bar and make something to go across the bottom coil of the spring at least 1/2 of the coil thickness and drill a hair over a 3/4" hole in it. Then bolt it on with a lock nut. In the meantime, post a Parts Wanted thread and see if anybody's got anything. I wouldn't drive her until I got something holding the spring in. That's a train wreck waiting to happen.

Thanks a lot for the help guys. Good news: I found the upper and lower retainers! I have them in a small cardboard box where my Drop Beams hardware came in. I never thought of checking that box until now. I'll be installed them (properly) this week. I'm preparing for the Lone Star Round Up in Austin next week (=
Thanks again!!

I'm looking for the upper spring retainers.

Anyone know where you could buy these? I need a set like the ones in Sargentrs picture. Mine were too rusted to reuse.

Thanks
