Name this tune - clank

Post by hillcountryflt »

Started noticing a new "noise" my truck is making of late. It may have been making it all along.
The best description I have for it is a lug nut in the hub cap. It seems to be coming from the driver's side front wheel. It is most noticeable when I am backing out of my drive way and turning the steering wheel.
I have pulled the hub caps to make sure my first thought was incorrect. I also lifted the front wheels to see if perhaps something has come loose since my disc brake conversion. No unnecessary play in the rotors. I can't tell if it continues at higher speeds (not exactly a quiet truck on the highway).

My guess is it's probably your outer brake pad rattling in the mounts. The outer pad has tabs that should fit (be bent) tightly to the caliper.

You may also have to coat the back (metal) portion of the inner pad with something like RTV (let it dry before you put the pad back on) to keep the pad from clanking. Some brake pads have a thin non - metallic piece to go on the back of the inner pad to keep the metal portion of the pad from rattling on the caliper piston too.

I had mentioned before that '75-'80 Granadas had a very similar disc brake design as the '73-'79 F-100/F150s. Here's a link that talks about the clanking pads.

Ya did install the lil rattle clip on the pad, right?

My 68 Mustang has a Granada disc brake swap. The pad backing plate has "ears" that are bent over and index on the caliper. The Raybestos pads I had weren't bent very well and the pad shifted in the caliper as pedal was applied. It made a single "pop" sound as the pad grabbed the rotor.

Thanks to ultra ranger I did install the anti-rattle clips.
I sure could not figure it out.
The suggested cause seems reasonable considering it occurred after switching to disc brakes. Just did not think the pads could make that type of noise.
