Manual Steering CV Rack

Post by marvin2 »

I'm curious if anyone has left manual steering after the CV IFS install. I have manual steering on my other '71 (stock suspension) and it doesn't bother me a bit. I was just wondering of there would be issues leaving a power steering pump off the crown victoria setup. What would I need to do with the power steering lines coming off the cv steering rack?

I think to successfully (and safely) switch to manual steering on the CV setup, you would need to switch to a true manual r&p unit. However, I don't know of any CV that came with a manual rack or of any manual rack and pinion that would be a direct swap.

Without hydraulic pressure being applied to the pistons inside the rack housing, there will be some looseness (slop) in the steering. The pressure is needed for take up of the clearances in the steering system. Without this, the steering will likely be loose and a good chance the front end will be twitchy going down the road.

Thanks for the input ultraranger; I figured there would be some issue with trying to use the power rack in a manual setup.

I just need to figure out how some of the guys on hear have setup the power steering pump, lines, etc. Maybe it makes the most sense to try to pull a pump from a crown vic so that it is all compatible.

I think I will probably thank myself down the road for doing power steering anyways...
