Well, I've just finished up the C6 rebuild (with shift kit) to be mated with a fresh 390 when I get that done. I'm taking the block, rods, and crank to the machine shop maybe this week. The motor will be a 0.030" overbore with stock rotating assembly and a nice sounding, torquey, streetable cam (haven't picked one yet), Edelbrock RPM intake and 600 cfm carb, full length headers w/ 2.5" Flowmaster 40 series, and refreshed, ported and polished iron heads.
I'm thinking about a 2200-2400 stall for this setup but I'm not sure on a brand yet. First of all, is this an appropriate stall speed for a street-driven hot rod? I want something a little hotter and higher stall than stock and I realize that converters are given an RPM range which depends on horsepower etc. I just want to know if anyone else runs something like this and I'd prefer to stay in the $150-$250 range. Secondly, anyone have any reviews on a particular brand of converter? Other than machine work and picking a cam, this is my last item to complete the assembly which might get swapped in this winter or hopefully by early spring!
Thanks in advance!
Anyone know torque converters?

Re: Anyone know torque converters?
just my opinion
Your 600 carb is way to small
I prefer either a 650 or 750 double pumper
You will have to pick out your cam shaft and rear gears before you pick the converter
I run a 30 over 390
edelbrock heads
I623 E651 lift hydraulic roller
I 298 E 306 duration
h beam rods
750 holley ultra HP
manual valve body C6
4.11 gears on a spool
3500 stall

Re: Anyone know torque converters?
If it's going to be a street truck, I wouldn't go over 2500. But, as tnlprt mentioned, you'll have to match your stall to everything else.
My 70 Duster had a 3800 stall on the manual valve bodied 727 & it was waay too slippery for street use. IMO.

Re: Anyone know torque converters?
I'm currently trying to pick a cam now...something that needs a step above stock stall speed. Haven't made up my mind just yet. Thanks for the replies! You guys have a particular brand that you favor?

Hi, there are several things to factor into your choice of converter.Stall speed is the most talked about characteristic of TC's......There is another that is seldom considered, but is very important in trucks more than cars...That is , stall torque ratio.. STR That is the ability of the conv to multiply torque. The best way to describe this is: say your engine develops 300#'s of torque, the conv. can double this on the output so you would have 600# going into the tranny, or it can be softened to about 450#'s which is what you would want for a truck as the rear end of the truck is light..Too much torque & you just sit & smoke coming out..So you would want a conv with a softer launch ratio. Engine torque, truck weight, gear ratio, tire size..cam & fuel, timing & more are to be factored into getting the best bang for your buck's...You may want to get this running with your stock unit & find out at what RPM your engine comes alive at...Then you will be better informed as to what stall you want...While you are sitting there smoking your rubber & watching someone's tail lights leaving, you realize then that a softer launch is needed...hth,,,,,,,,,,,donnie

Re: Anyone know torque converters?
what did end up installing for your torque stall spec? with my rebuilt 390, i went 30 over, alumimun pistons, a edelbrock high rise, a holley 700 double pumper, and a 280H comp cam. This set up gives provides me with great power and a macho grumble out my dual 2.5" exhaust. i am very interested in hearing what you installed for a torque. i am also running a rebuilt C6, with a shift kit and a 2700 stall. thanks.
