C6 Bellhousing VS Firewall

Post by Ol-Edhead »

Hello. I'm in the process of trying to get my 1970 F100 up and running. The engine and transmission are ready to be re-installed, but during the process I noticed there's not enough clearance between the bell housing and the firewall. I need about a half an inch. I was thinking of pounding the firewall until I get that half inch...but I'm not sure if it's a good idea. The transmission is an upgrade from a smaller, manual transmission. Unfortunately, I'm not sure what the other transmission was but regardless it was not original to the truck. Any help is greatly appreciated.

jack the cab up to let it go in. your cab mounts or rubber bushings are probably worn enough that its not letting it go in from the front. dont hammer the cab in. that is the wrong thing to do. it will mess up remounting the transmission cover. and it will show in side the cab. making either the firewall cover bulge out or the floor mat not fit right.

Here's my 68 that the PO put a C6 in. His solution was beating the floor in. Not the right way to do it.

Trucks with C6 trans and 4 speeds should have a removable hump like this. C6 without the holes of course

There is a indent in the floor were the lip of the cover sits in. The hole should be cut about an inch inside of that.

I had same problem when I put a 351w and c6 trans in mine. I just made a new trans cross member out of some scape metal that let the transmission drop down about 3/4 in. Works perfect and don't have a beat up firewall.

Hi Ol-Edhead, I had a very similar problem installing my FE+T18 combo in my '72 F250. Here's a thread documenting the problem and how I fixed it:

http://www.fordification.com/forum/view ... =4&t=41449

The synopsis: remove two rivets and four bolts that hold the middle crossmember (the one between the transmission mount point and the under-engine crossmember), then slide it back out of the way.
