I wasn't at all talking about an old 4 speed VS a modern 5 speed overdrive. I gave very specific transmission models as examples, not one is a 4 speed.

If you look at drivetrain design as a combination of efficiency, longevity and stupidproofedness (made up word) I feel overdrive high gear makes the most sense for most applications.

Hey let me try. Is there a difference in a manual 5 speed tranny and a manual 4 speed with an overdrive, don't it get you to the same engine rpm. :? Law of physics- doesen't that pretty much tell you the futher you get away from your power source the more power you loose.
So i would think that reguardless if your high gear/low gear is in the rear or tranny you will have power loss the futher you get away from that power source.
Answer: direct drive 1.1 would be more efficent if power source was closer to powering gear set or connected directly to tires as maybe a electric moter is to a hybrid car. :2cents:

Dustin,

I get what you are saying about longevity and stupidproffedness. You are 100% right. What I don't agree with is why you think one is more efficient than the others. Same trucks. One with a deep rear gear and OD. One with a high rear gear and no OD. They have identical gear spacing and identical combined gearing (trans gear X rear gear). Why would the one with the deep rear gear be more efficient? That is what I don't understand. You said the same thing before with, "Pit two identicle trucks against each other, but with different trannies and the difference is clear as day, the one with lower gears wins in overall driveability." Are you talking about the trans having the same gears and then the truck with the lower rear gears wins in driveability? Is so, then yeah, of course it does, but we are talking over all gearing (trans gear x rear gear).

So, I'm back to my original question.

Sorry, I haven't followed this since my last post but I ran across these and I think they would be just the ticket for any of those pesky torque issues.

Good god,

the world of type sucks, no matter how something is typed it is taken wrong by everyone.

so an engine gets extra torquey with an overdrive,ok then stiffen some springs or live with it.

Good people leave becuase someone types something that gets read wrong by both parties.
