AOD Swap

Post by SVT522 »

The late model 5-speed I had in my '67 finally started making some horrible noises! I swapped in an AOD out of an 1989 F-150. The overdrive has a better ratio and I can cruise at 60mph at 2000 rpm. With the 4.11s in the rear I got 15.5 mpg driving to my brother's house this weekend!

Cool! You know, you should write up a tutorial on what you had to do to install that tranny. I'm sure it would get a lot of reading if it were posted here on the site. ;)

That's behind a small-block, right?

It's behind a 5.0 Mustang engine. Right now I've got a lot going on with my military retirement less than 30 days away. After I get settled in I would be willing to write about it. Interested in how I swapped a late model 5-speed behind a small block? I wrote an article for FTE and they never posted it!

I remember that. I kept waiting to see that article, I emailed one of the moderator's asking about it after you said you submitted it. Never heard back.

Absolutely please post it!!!!!!

That is exactly what I plan to do except with a 351w and a T-5 or equivalent close ratio 5 speed. All the info would be a great help. Thanks

i had a aod in my old 70 shortbed, it was ok but i put a five speed that was built and loved it. the aod seemed to eat up alot more power and i really do like sticks alotmore. my 302 had dart sr. heads a motorsport f cam and a b&m 144 blower. i used the clutch pedals out out a 5.0 mustang in both that truck and my 64 falcon hardtop and it worked great.

I drove to Delaware this weekend. I followed my dad, who had his cruise control set on 55. I got 19.1 mpg driving 55 with 1200 pounds of cargo. Not bad for a truck with 4.11s in the rear!

I am putting an AOD in my 72 swb project and would love some info from someone who has done it. Curious as to crossmember, driveshaft etc. I have a T-5, and thought of going that route too.

My stock cross member worked with a C-6 tranny mount. The driveshaft I had behind my late model 5-speed worked with the AOD. A C-4 is darn close to the same length as an AOD...you might try a driveshaft from a truck that had one.

I would like to hear how you did that and see some pictures of it.
