PS pulleys and belts

Post by kaptnkaos »

Hey Guys,

Not sure if this is I post this question or not.
I am converting to PS on the '68 CS...
Everything is in except mounting the pump and connecting the hoses.
A question came to mind... Do I have to change any pulleys?
If so, I wanna do it now if I do...
I have both single and a 2 goove fan pulley.
The crank pulley is double already.
I have all the stuff for the A/C add on, but am gooing to wait until later to install that.
I will change the crank pulley while I have easy access.
Do I need to put the tensioner and idler pulley on for the PS or can that wait.
Anyone happen to know what size PS belt I'm gonna need?
I could do the string thing, but I'm feelin' lazy today and that require getting dressed and going to my friend's barn where the truck is...

Thanks guys,

I think you need a 3 groove pulley for the crank. The alternator and water pump already use two pulleys. Unless you want to go with only one belt. I had a parts truck that used the 2 pulley crank and only one belt for the alt/fan. Anybody else?

Shouldn't this be in Suspension/steering/brakes?

not with me. i can stop and get some tomorrow. i'm going by there on the way to cut wood. i got to thinking about it. the power steering pump belt will hit the middle crank pulley and the rear water pump pulley. the a/c is the outer pulley for everything the inner crank pulley should be the alt. well im not sure. but the a/c is for the outer pulley on eveything.

Hey Fordman thanks...

That might be all I needed to know.
I will install both the double WP pulley and the 3rd (outer) pulley on the crank...
less work when I do install the A/C unit...
I think I'll mount the A/C radiator lookin' part (whatever the heck that thing is called) while I have the grille off.
I also have an oil cooler that came on the '71.
A piece goes where the oil filter goes now that moves the filter out to the frame where it sits vertical.
Two braided steel hoses go from it to the cooler mounted to the rad support just in front of the radiator on the bottom.
I've not seen on like it, but I thought it might be a good thing to have when I'm haulin the camper around.

here we go. the altnator goes to the rear crank pulley and water pump. the power stering goes to the water pump crank and the idler pulley on the drivers side. the a/c goes to the crank and idler pulley on the passenger side.

Thanks Fordman...

That's just what I needed...
I didn't know there was an idler pulley for the PS...
I'm pretty sure I have two of them so it's not a problem...

The power steering pump doesn't have an idler pulley. That idler shown in fordman's attachment is for the A/C. The PS belt simply goes around the crankshaft, water pump and PS pump. The adjustment for that belt is on the PS pump bracket.
