What is this brake part? Rebuild w/PICS

Post by FoMoCo »

Hey all, some paid time off is near and so is some weather in the 70 degree range. I figured it's a good time to start on the brakes. I've done a complete brake overhaul on my 67 and this 69's aren't much different. I bought this truck used and the brakes, even after adding a new MS and power booster, are still weak. Plus, it would pull hard the the passenger side. I removed all the drums and hardware and found a blown bearing seal on the driverside. Grease was packed into everything. I've driven about 7,ooo miles like this :( . The picture with the shiny brake shoes shows the fresh lair of grease. The thing I cant figure out is the dogbone/fork looking part in the back. It was only on the passenger side. I know it's for the parking brake, but shouldn't there be one on the drivers side?

there is no parking brake on the front wheels. that bar is just a spreader bar. for the shoes. both sides should have one on the back brakes. but not on the front brakes.

With that spreader bar there should also be an oval shaped spring and a slotted oval shaped washer for both sides. The end of the bar with the longer slot goes toward the front of the truck. The spring and washer go on the long end. :)

Some more help please. Isn't there supposed to be a cable thingy to ratchet the star on the lower spreader??? The first pic is the front assembly with only the hub removed. I forget what all is supposed to be there.

As the the bone thiny, will I be okay with just one?

As stated, that 'bone thingy' is the parking brake link, and only belongs on the rear brakes, not the front.

Nick,

Good topic though.
Keith, sure wish Fordification was around back in the seventies!
(Yeah, I'd put brakes back together only to find I didn't assemble them right).
A picture is worth a thousand words!

I've got new cable assemblies on order, but where can I find a spreader bar? Look's like the previous owner didn't have a clue. At least I'm finding this out now and not after I have an accident.

Try a salvage yard. They are the same thru at least 79.I think the ones on my 96 F150 are the same.
