Speedometer Odometer do not work

Post by 69twotone »

Hi all,
My speedometer and Odometer are both not functioning. Any ideas or areas to begin trouble shooting for a fix?

Pull housing from back of the speedo head, then pull cable out to see if it is broken. If cable is ok, take out cable end in tranny and check the gear, most likely has teeth stripped.

Can you get a new cable at an auto parts store, or will I have to find one from a donor vehicle

pull end out attached to tranny and try to hook up to elec drill and see if it spins if so you know everything from drill up is fine and it's nylon gear in trans.

Okay it spins, Two questions Should you be able to remove the metal piece from inside the cable or should it stay in place. I am wondering because I can feel the gears in the tranny and they do not feel stripped? If you should not be able to remove the metal piece that actually twists that may be my problem. Just hoping I do not have to tear in to the tranny.

io think you can remove the inner steel cable but i am unsure if it has to come out one end or the other. if the cable is spinning the speedo then the gear must be the problem.. those arent hard to remove. it is a small unit on the rear side of the trans that comes right out. once it is out you will be holding the gear and you can inspect it to see if its worn down or stripped.

I noticed when I put trans (c-6) back in my truck the middle part of speedo cable wanting to slide a little, so I think that's normal. Have not done nylon speedo gear on Ford only GM, on GM, I recall having to pull driveshaft/tailshaft housing to get to nylon gear on output shaft, the metal detent pin was sheared off and gear was just freewheeling. Good luck, Banjo.

i mad a tutorial on this with some pics i dont think you have to remove the transmission here is what to do. take a 7/8 socket and remove the threaded part of the speedo gear from the transmission. once it is removed you can just pull the gear out by hand and inspect it. . this was done on a 1970 c6 fe big block transmission. these pics are dark they are from inside my garage at night. i'm sorry they arent any brighter. if someone else can brighten them you have my permission to do so.

Fordman,
Are you talking about the gear connected to the speedometer or the gears inside the transmission that turn the gear connected to the speedometer. I pulled the gear connected to the speedometer and it looks good as far as I can tell (no shredding or missing teeth. I felt inside the transmission and the gear that turns the speedometer also feels somewhat good. I can't get a visual on the gear in the transmission since the hole is at such a wierd angle. The previous owner thought maybe the gears inside the tranny were bad. Do you know how to pull those?

If you are positive that everything is ok from the driven gear( the little one on the end of the speedo cable that you pulled out of the tranny) up through the speedo head, Then the driving gear is prolly stripped or slipping on the tranny output shaft. You will have to pull the tailhousing to repair this.

Not sure if this helps or not but I tried to make these pictures from Fordman brighter.
