Rear axle to wheels

I have a 1970 F100 of course, the question is. The rear wheels should sit on a spigot on the axle, meaning that the weight of the vehicle is carried on the axle and the wheel nuts hold on the wheel on. The axles installed on my model have on spigots so the wheel nuts do there job but support the weight of the vehicle as well. Is this correct or are the axles incorrect and should be replaced? It is preferable that they center up on the hubs, but what you have is serviceable.

Been a while since I had the hubcaps off of mine, but I seem to recall that the rear wheels (which are factory) do not center up on the hubs (or spigots or pilots) (which are also factory) but do on the front.

spigots? pilots? on a f100 the factory rear wheel fits around the center of the axle that sticks out of the center of the hub. that is what supports most of the weight of the truck. the threaded lugs are just to hold the wheel on althought they may take some weight.

Actually, the F100 axle protrusion doesn't stick out far enough to even touch the wheel. It's solely the job of the lugnuts to center and hold the wheel:

The wheels on our trucks are "lug centric" meaning that the wheels are centered by the bolt holes/lug nuts and not the center bore. In fact the center bore can be a little off from the centerline of the wheel. That's why tires mounted on lug centric wheels should be balanced using the bolt holes and not the center hole.

On newer model "hub centric" wheels, the center bore IS the center of the wheel instead of the bolt holes. The center bore is centered to the hub of the axle. Some wheels use inserts or rings to help center it.

you can use dually rims up to '83.
'84 is when they went the 2 piece non conical nuts.

So when you take your truck to the tire store to have the tires balanced ask them to balance off the lugs!! They should be able to!!!! makes the truck ride lots better usually!!!!
