I left a recent post about wandering steering so I took your advice and had my 69 F-350 alined and they found that my kingpins are shot and I should get a steering box so I guess that would be the problem. Now is the kingpin kit hard to replace and the steering box is pretty much replacing a part?

i had a shop do my king pins years ago. you have to ream out your i beams in order to get the new brass bushins to fit in the ibeam.

the steering box has three bolts that hold it on and a pitman arm that is attached to the drag link. and or power steering hoses if equiped.

Stearing box is easy. Have a shop (that is familiar kingpins, usually a place that does some medium duty truck work) do the kingpins.

The bushings are pressed into the beams, then the bushings are reamed to fit the kingpins.

Thats what Im thinking what kind of price range are we talking about for labor wise

last time i had it done I took the Ibeams in myself and had kingpins and pivot bushing put in. they were old/siezed/stuck and took 2 hours. so it was $145. I supplied parts.

My response is about a duplicate of what I said last time, that you need to replace everything. You might want to read the "conversion to disc brake" tutorial for pictures of kingpins and what not. I've researched alot, as my truck is scary to drive due to wandering and end result of tons of searching on this cite is to change all wear items in one shot, all bushings/rubber on front end and kingpins, tie rod ends, etc,

Yep, I agree that this is a fantastic time to go ahead and not only replace your worn kingpins, but to get a disc-brake setup installed at the same time. I mean, you might as well do it now, while the whole front end is out of the truck, right?

Just find a '73-'79 truck with discs and take the entire front suspension, steering and brakes. Remove the disc brake components from the donor spindles, so that you only have the I-beam/kingpin/spindle combo. Drop those off at the local machine shop and have them install new kingpins (with bronze bushings, NOT the plastic ones!), and then bolt everything back into your truck.
