Column-mount tach

Post by MaxKlinger »

Hey guys,

Looking to mount a tach on the column of my bump. I've searched both Jegs and Summit Racing for parts but in both cases it's hard to narrow my search to column-mounted tachs; most are in-dash units.

Do you guys have column mounted tachs? If so, what did you use?

I'm also having a hard time finding gauge styles that compliment our trucks. Any suggestions? VDO Series I looked nice, but it's an in-dash unit.

Thanks!
Tony

I have not found/seen one that looks good with our gages. You can use just about any Tach, some you have to get a Column Kit that comes with a Bucket and stand to put the Tach into.

I know I can't be too picky, but it would be nice to find something with narrow sans-serif lettering that would look good on a '60s column. Most of the gauges today look like they're geared for the import tuner crowd. Hell, I'm only looking for a 6,000 RPM tach; at that point my brother's Honda doesn't even begin to make power yet.

I installed an AUTOMETER large size tach in "Jethro".
You know I'm always doing at least 7,500 RPM'S on that tired old 300!

I've been using AUTOMETER for over 20 years and never been let down.

Plus they really look awesome!

For around $370.00, you can get a Rally-Pac from a 65 or 66 Mustang and it would look period correct. That is on my list of things to do.......one day.

Another vote for the Sunpro line. If you got points ignition there's no reason you can't run one of the 60s models, the original Super Tach. Those would be period correct but you gotta get a box for it and calibrate it. PITA but worth it IMO.

I also like some of the early Auto Meter stuff from the 80s-90s.

And IMO, anything bigger than 3 3/8" is overkill on a column mount.

Do this;

There's athread in this subforum somewhere about making it. Tach is 0-4000rpm from a Bluebird bus press mounted in some brushed 3" EMT. The column mount is 2" EMT and the connector is a squished peice of 2" stainless. Took a couple hours and it works great. Found an inductive prox at work last week so I can still use it after the diesel swap...

I used a black Autogage painted to match.

Oh, and if you like VDO, they offer mounting cups for most of their stuff.

I agree completely. I'm not a fan of the enormous tachometers some people have, they obstruct the view or use of other dashboard-area devices. I'm not racing my truck, I just find a tach useful to have.

DuckRyder, your painted-to-match looks great. I'd do that too but I think I'm going to repaint my interior to get rid of the ugly green I have now.

I found VDO's website (they're a division of Siemens) but I can't find a manufacturer's catalog, only through distributors like Summit or Jeg's. I want to make sure I can find a housing that matches the gauge I buy!

Also, I see some of you have added other gauges. I'd also like to add a more accurate oil pressure, water temp, and voltage gauge. Where is a good place to mount them? I was thinking of making a radio delete plate with gauges inset. Thoughts?

Thanks for your help, guys.
