Not sure if this is what you're talking about, but I've seen brakes driven with no linings for so long that what was left of the shoe and drum were so thin that the pistons in the wheel cylinder had traveled past their max and popped out of the cylinder. No more brakes.

When I pulled the shoes, what was left of the pad just fell off, it was paper thin. The metal springs and such are pitted from brake fluid. The wheel cylinder just fell apart as soon as I got it loose.
I think the drum is ok, but I need to measure it for thickness. I do no feel like buying new drums right now.

yea you can here a truck that is metal to metal coming down the street to a stop. scrapppppe.

Ok, good news! The truck was finally able to drive itself out of the garage this evening! Brakes are working good, or as good as manual brakes can.
Studs are in, gotta get a new set of lug nuts tho, missing three and the rest are mismatched.
Gotta get the carb tuned, and get the choke working, right now its idleing pretty high, when you drop in in gear it trys its best to stall out.
