Swapping engines and trans????

Post by Lakota »

I've pulled the 6 cyl/3speed from my wifes 70 F100. She's got a 352/T85 to go in. I noticed that the T85 is a bit longer than the 3 speed. Can I move the trans mount back, or keep the engine mounts in the 6 cyl position (forward holes)? Do I need to change the driveshaft?

Also, How does a T85 operate? I see a solenoid on one side and what looks like a second solenoid on the other, plus a lever connected to a pull handle marked 'overdrive'. Does the lever override the electric solenoid?

the enigne mounts are the same you don't have to mess with them. the trans will rquire a shorter drivesahft it sounds like. i'm not sure about the trans crossmemeber i think it only goes in one place it might just work as is.

The engine mounts are the same but they will have to be moved back? a set of holes in the frame.

well what worked best when i switched from a 240/C4 to a 302/FMX was to bolt the engine completely up to the trans, take the tranny crossmember out/move it out of the way. then when the engine is in the engine mounts, get a hydrolic jack and jack up the tail end of the transmission and bolt the crossmember to the transmission, then let the transmission rest on the frame, and if you're lucky you won't have to drill some holes in your frame. I had to drill 2 1/2" holes in my frame because my tranny crossmember rested about an inch further back from the holes. then hook up your driveshaft.

GOOD LUCK! 8)

you can also spin the crossmember in the frame. so watch which way it came out. its only suppose to go back in one direction.

I finally got some time to myself. Being retired is more work than a full time job. The down side of doing nothing is you never know when you're finished.
I did some measurements. The 6 cyl/3 speed is 40" from engine mount to trans mount, the 352/T85 is 38". There are holes to set the frame mounts back 2". The tail end of the T85 trans is about 4" longer, good thing I saved the front driveshaft from the donor truck.

All I need now is a wiring diagram for the overdrive solenoid and governor. I also need an explanation of what the lockout lever does.
