blue68's Grill

Post by blue68 »

I was wondering today about the Lye process with stripping the anodizing and stuff... is there any other way to do that with something other than Lye? Wouldn't anything that is a base strip than anodizing off? I want to get my grill shiny for the Spring:)

Thanks

As a matter of fact...

Easy Off oven cleaner. Just be VERY sure you don't get it anywhere you don't want it (mask it well, in other words) and don't get it on your skin. And don't inhale it either. And don't get it in your eyes. And, err, you get the idea..

I'll see if I can find all the details, but I know it's been done. Some of the guys on the ZRX forum have done this to remove the gold anodizing on the rear shock resevoir, and it leaves a very pretty, shiny surface, easy to polish.

My oldest daughter used EasyOff to remove the anodizing from her rear window on her pickup, and it worked great! Just do it in a well ventilated area, and don't get in too big of a hurry.

hey, hardtailjohn, how do you use it... just spray on, wipe off, or is there a lot of armwork involved, because I do not own a buffer.

Thanks!

Ok, I tried some EasyOff on a peice of taillight trim. I let it soak real good for about 15 minutes, and I cleaned the stuff off of it. Then I tried my best to sand/buff it by hand, and nothing happens. It just turns white. I don't think EasyOff will remove anodized coatings. I tried soaking it three more times after that, and each time the anodizing was still there. Any ideas?

Thats what I did the last time, but nothing happened. Is there anything else in the grocery store with more of a Lye or sodium hydroxide solution?

I'll probably end up picking up some Red Devil lye or DrainO some day when I get some time and doing what Keith did in the "polishing aluminum trim" tutorial. I'll let ya'll know how it turns out.
