looking for metal prep

Post by dotcentral »

I have some bare metal parts I need to prep for paint. What is a good, easy to find at Lowe's or Home Depot product to use? Or something else easy to find and apply? I was thinking there is a product that i can wipe on the parts before hitting them with primer.

This is for chassis parts and valve covers.

I highly recommend DX330 from PPG... wipe it on gently with a clean rag, then BEFORE it dries (VERY important!!), wipe gently off with another clean rag... then hit it with primer when all nice and dry!!

For other than body panels, I'd Hit it with DX330 as suggested above then just use a good quality self etching primer (If you aren't POR 15ing it or something)

Well, I did the disc brake shields, brake pedal and firewall mounting bracket, and a bunch of misc fasteners. I had previuosly soaked them for about a week in vinegar, which removed the rust pretty well, along with paint, grease, dirt, etc. Then I soaked it overnight in a tub of water as a rinse. Pulled it out of the water today, rinsed, & let air dry. Got some light rust, from letting it air dry, so I wiped everything with acetone, and painted it with Rustoleum rust converter. Then, went over everything with Rustoleum satin black. I figured these parts are rarely seen, so I'd use materials that I already have for them.

I might try the DX330 for the valve covers if it can withstand higher temperatures.

I use a product called "One Step" from Bondo. It's an aerosol rust converting spray that turns rust into balck metal ready for priming. I've used it extensively and have been very pleased with it.

Yea, I got it at a parts store here in town. A real parts store, not a box store.
A paint shop might carry it, too.

There's a really good one step rust conversion coating at www.aircraftfinishing.com It's got an acrylic that stays on top, and is great to paint over. You can brush or spray this stuff, and it's also non hazardous.
