390 FE Identification

Post by LuvMyScamper »

Hello folks, I have a question about 390's. We currently have a 390 in our '71 F350 that we need to overhaul but can't afford to do that for a couple of years. We started browsing for used ones to do an engine swap. On one of the for sale sites I found a 390FE that the owner claims to be in good running condition with low miles. The engine is out of an F700 grain truck, the year I'm not sure but 70's I would guess. The motor just looks different than ours in some ways, so I'm second-guessing this is a 390. For one thing, the dipstick is on the passenger side. I'll attach some pics as well as the truck it's coming out of. Could this be a 391 maybe? If it is a 391, would it be a suitable swap into our F350 motorhome? Looking forward to your feedback!

Thats looks indeed like an FT engine, I think the simple answer is its not worth all the little differences and work to put a FT into a light duty truck. There is alot of info out there that details the differences. just google differences between FT391 and FE390
