Cam for 390 Strokered Engine??
Questions:
1- do the below specs/description make sense?
2- Would this engine work well in my F250 truck? (I have FPA headerss, and Edel performer intake I can put on it as well)
3- it was pulled from a mustang, it has a Lunati Voodoo cam.... What cam would I run to run in this if I bought this?
I have run across a good deal on a rebuilt Ford FE 390. I am told its a "410", Ford 390 block with the 428 1U crankshaft. This block has been bored 60 over so the actual cubic inch is a 422. All machine work is complete. New pistons, rings, bearings, the works. The cam is a Lunauti Voodoo. The heads are the 6090 R and have had the exhaust bosses drilled for the 16 bolt cobra manifolds. They are also fitted with new valves, hardened seats, and the matching Lunnauti heavy duty springs. The engine was rebuilt, but then has <1000 miles on it.
thanks!

It sounds nice but which Voodoo camshaft is it and what do you want out of the build? It could be a lot of motor but not have much low end. I am not familiar with your pickup what transmission do you have?

Since it was in a Mustang it is probably a high lift cam. If the price is good you can always swap it out and sell it (keep the lifters matched to the cam lobes). A 1000 miles is not much and you could get part of the cost of a new cam kit. However since you have a 4 speed and low gears you could keep it and have fun. (Unless you need vacuum for your brakes .)
The parts you have sound like a good start for that motor.

Re: Cam for 390 Strokered Engine??
That seems like a nice cam. Not much for a performance cam really, I would consider it a good driver and think you would like it. Not a "RV" cam but should go well with what your drive line is (my Camper Special has the 3:73 rear gears not 4:11 and I don't know what was "standard"). I think you would like it and it should run much better than stock. Again depending on what it is going to cost, but the parts you said you have will work on it really well.

Re: Cam for 390 Strokered Engine??
Thanks for reviewing.... I need to get the engine block checked, as I do worry about a bore 60 over and potential for running hot/block issues.... that seems max of what someone would want to push with a 360/390 blockDuckRyder wrote:That is a nice cam.
seems like from what people are saying/analyzing, that decent low end torque, and reasonable set up for an F250 truck?
thanks all for the advice

Re: Cam for 390 Strokered Engine??
Read some of the stuff we talked about on colnago threads...
But I’d say that should be a nice running engine and the cam ought to work well for you, with the extra cubic inches it will act a bit milder than what descriptions in a smaller cube engine say.
Watch your dynamic compression and all should be well...
Some 390 blocks will easily go 60 over, some won’t. a sonic check will tell you where you are at if the engine is to be torn down anyway...
