fuel pump threads stripped

Post by 70xlt »

Hi, I removed my old fuel pump to replace with new one. when removing rear fuel pump bolt there was difficulty, after removal I noticed the end of the screw threads was damaged, I tried running a tap into the hole and clean up the present threads, unfortunately I had no luck, the threads are now ruined for the 3/8" x 16 bolt. What is a solution to repair or replace? Can I go to a larger screw and tap the whole out or do I have to replace the housing?

Thx

You have two different options here that I know would work.
1. You could drill and retap the bolt hole, (I would go up to a metric sized bolt-rather than jump up to the next SAE size which would be 1/2").
2. Drill and install a helicoil for the original 3/8" bolt hole, (the helicoil kits usually come with the required drill bit and a "install tool" for putting the helicoil in)..

If it were mine i would probably op for the helicoil.
