As the title states, I just primed my dry engine with a new oil pump with a electric drill and the oil filter is super bulged.
Details: engine has 55,000mi 360fe, out for head work and seals. New old stock Mellings Oil pump, m57b (higher pressure police interceptor, around 60 psi max). Oil passage from pump to filter drilled to 7/16 and filter adaptor passages blended. Arp oil pump drive shaft. #70 Holley jets under rocker stands, home baffled oil pan, moroso bondage tray, clearanced for rear main cap drain. Oil filter is fl-1a motorcraft, oil is federated semi-synthetic 10-30
Could I have blocked something while the pan or heads were off that would cause the filter to swell?
Are the #70 jets too much restriction? Rockers are dripping oil ok, passenger side was just starting to get oil when I noticed the filter. Engine is out of truck so no oil gauge readings.
Is it possible that i spun the pump too fast with the drill? It is rated at 0-800rpm and I don't think I managed to get it wound all the way up.
I will get photos up soon

Re: Help: bulging oil filters when priming oil pump 360fe
Problem turned out to be stuck oil pump bypass valve. I pulled restrictors with no change, dropped the pan, broke open the pump and worked the valve back and forth with a flat head screwdriver. Reassembled with new filter and no problems. Drill also turned the pump much easier.

Uh-oh. Guess I'd better prime my engine before dropping it into the truck. I have a new Melling, but not the high-pressure version. Dang. Always something. Better safe than sorry, though.tnlprt wrote:Not an uncommon problem

Better to prime the engine on the engine stand ..
A lot easier to pull the pan if there is a problem
Should have around 55LBS pressure with a drill

Is there a good way to hook up a oil pressure gauge on the stand?
I was certainly glad that I was able to deal with this before it was in the truck.

A mechanical gauge will work where you have the electric sending unit
Right on the oil filter adapter

I always like high volume more than high pressure pumps.

You can always shim the spring for more pressure if wanted
