Ignition Timing Marks on this 390?

Post by jjsamc »

I wanted to check the ignition timing on my 390 engine, but the marks do not have numbers.
Is the short painted mark TDC or 1 degrees BTDC?
Is the longer painted mark 5 or 6 degrees BTDC?
Or am I looking at this all wrong?

It's been a while since I've dealt with timing marks, but think the triangle to the left is zero, the short mark is 10 degrees, and the long mark is 20 degrees. The other long marks are 30 and 40. The pointer is at 36 degrees. My balancer doesn't have the triangle, but it's only a '67 352. I'm not sure how the balancers changed over the years, or over the sizes.

Do you have an adjustable timing light? If so, you can set it to zero, get a reading, then set it to ten, and see where it lines up on the balancer. This is just a quick check to see if the short marks are one degree apart, or two. Either way, I still think the triangle is TDC.

Normally the old Fe's had 4 long marks on the 10 degree increment marks 20 before 10 before tdc and then 10 after. That's normally what i've seen so looks like your looking at it right. Set it at 10 before she should be happy.
