Hey all,
Have a 70 f100 with a period correct 302.
Did a clutch on it and test drove..everything was great.
Came back to take it out an hour later and it started running rough...sputtering..coughing and not wanting to idle...then wouldnt start.
Checked all the usual suspects...everything seemed ok.
Started parts swapping...new coil..new dizzy...installed correctly.
Truck still wont start...have good spark...fuel..good compression(avg was 130 per cylinder, with no significant drop offs). Tried starting fluid..nope..
Just turns over and sounds like it wants to catch but doesnt..
Was thinking timing chain jumped...so i did turn the motor by hand to watch the rotor both ways...only 4 degress difference..so i cant imagine the chain slipped....
Hoping some of your expertise can give me another point i may have missed?...
Thanks in advance for any and all help fellas...
Wits end

Back to basics. Start with resetting the timing. How do the plugs look?

I'd pull the plugs out and make sure the carb didn't decide to dump and foul the plugs. They shouldn't be wet and black with gas. If they are you could try burning them off with a propane torch or sandblasting them. Where exactly do you say it has spark?

Even further back to basics:
Was it fine before the clutch work? If yes:
What did you mess with? (neutral safety switch? vac lines? and so on and so forth)
You say it has spark, fuel and compression and at the right time - that is all it needs to run, so recheck.
Does it have GOOD fuel and enough of it? (IE did it sit a long time)
Does it have GOOD spark?
More details: Carb, fuel pump, points condenser ....

Re: Wits end
It ran great after clutch install...i pulled all the plugs to do the compression tests...found three with cracked insulators, and replaced those.
Im going to drain down some fuel today to check for water contamination..
Thats whats so frustrating...all the basics check out.
Good spark at the plugs...fuel in the cylinders..and good compression...crazy..

Re: Wits end
Try replacing condenser. I know you stated that you already replaced the distributor but I've replaced condensers before just to have them go bad a week later. I replaced so much stuff after the fact because I thought, "Well, it can't be the condenser as it is brand new." I was wrong. I bought a top of the line one and it ran fine. It may not be your problem but it can't hurt to try.
Good luck.
Good luck.
