Power Drum to Power Disc conversion

Post by ponyexpress »

I am currently working on my 71 Ford F-100 Custom. I have found I-beams, spindles ,calipers, rotors, kingpins from a 1977 E-150 Van. The calipers, rotors and pads are all brand new including new front shocks. The guy wants $400 for everything including sway bar. I think this is a really good deal because it is already removed from the van and there a lot of new parts.
My question to you guys is. My truck currently has power drum brakes. Can I use the same power booster and master cylinder that is on my truck or is the power booster and master cylinder from a disc brake vehicle different. Also, Do I need a brake proportioning valve? Thanks !

Booster will work, but you should be aware the pressure retention valve in the drum brake master cylinder front section may cause your calipers to drag. The reservoir needs to be checked more often with disc brakes too.

I would do a LOT more research before parting with $400.00 dollars on disc brake suspension parts from a van.

I don't know for certain if the van disc assemblies from the spindle outward would work on your truck but, I'm fairly certain the van I-beams and radius arms aren't the same as an F-series truck. The front sway bar is definitely not the same as the front sway bar on a '75-'79 F-series truck. The only thing from the van sway bar assembly you can use are the C-brackets.

You would be better off to get the disc brake components from a '73-'79 F100 or a '75-'79 F150 --suspensions/components that will definitely be compatible with your truck.

The disc/drum brake valve can be sourced from the donor vehicle. A new (not rebuilt) disc/drum MC should be installed.

I got all this for $125.00 when I swapped my ' 69 F100 over to '77 F100 discs.
