BRRRR...

Post by twerp »

Has anyone else had the experience of a cold transmission holding a shift longer than normal or jerky between gears?

I have noticed that if I don't let mine warm up for a good ten minutes in the mornings that are 30 or below that when I do leave it holds or jerks a bit. Warm temp is fine.

Any takers? Thanks.

that could be normal considering the possible age of the transmission. it is always good to let an engine warm up before you start driving it anyway. but i don't always follow that advice either.

mine was rebuilt 2 yrs ago and does the same thing, and sometimes when its real cold it won't even go into gear until it warms up. i asked an older freind who has owned ford trucks since the 50's and he told me its not that uncommon and don't worry about it.

Transmission seals get old and hard--then don't do their job when it's cold. It's caused by low fluid pressure because it's leaking past the seals. I've never really had the problem personally but an OLD c6 truck that a neighboring business has does the same thing, or won't go into gear at all until it warms up. It's been doing that for years and it's still running but it's not exactly a GOOD situation.

When you had your Tranny "rebuilt" the gaskets, seals, bands, steels all got replaced. I'll bet that your case/core/hard parts are the same ones, Right?
A hydrostatic transmission relies on very high pressure and requires close tolerances. When your tranny is cold there are some gaps that with an increase in heat they expand, hence your gaps disappear and it's a happy transmission....
