Transpan bolt holes.

Post by rjewkes »

The Bossess on my trans are not all the same. Without pulling it from the truck or removing the crossmember is there an easy way to repair the three holes that are now 3/8" as opposed to the original? 5/16 aint the originals? The two front passenger side and one in the right rear corner are the oversized. Will heli coil work or is a trans that has only 20,000 on t doomed?

If heli coils work is there any tips not listed in the instruction manual?

Just out of curiosity, why is it important? Why would a couple slightly-larger pan bolts "doom" a transmission?

Seems to me to be a lot of work just so that all the bolts have the same size head. I'd think that as long as the oversized holes are properly threaded and things aren't leaking, just leave it alone.

could you put a bolt and nut all the way through the back one? or maybe the front ones too.

like a 3/8 bolt in the whole with a half inch bolt on its backside? That cold work.

where one end of the bolt is died 3/8 and the other half is died 5/16? With a half inch outer diameter nut on the back?

that or find a bolt that has the typical 1/2 cap on it and is 3/8 threads by 18 or 20?

 Just realized what you meant the back on could work like that but the front two are part of the wall of the trans and the back of the holesare on the inside.

i was thinking that the rear hole went all the way through. so you could put a regular 5/16 bolt and nut all the way through that hole and not have to drill the pan out. the front i can't remember if it goes all the way through or not but if it did you could do the same thing to it. whatever size bolt holes are in the pan is what i would try to match. isn't 1/2 way to big to go in the transmission under there.

i meant the wrench/socket size i think if i do it right when i change the fluid/filter pan out before the trip in april i'll just get the helicoil kit with the corectt over sized tap and the heli coil install kit. With the trans pan off the holes 'll be easier to get to.

Thanks guys.
