Anti-rattle clip installation

Post by hillcountryflt »

Trying to get my front together after converting drums to disks (from a 1978 F150). Everything else I have figured out, but for the life of me the anti-rattle clip installation eludes me. My chilton's describes it but not very clearly.

The clip goes on the lower end of the inner pad.

They must ship with two styles of anti-rattle clips. I have a clip that looks like the one in the picture and another is a thin long curved bar.

I'm guessing the "thin long curved bar" you reference is the spring for the caliper key. It goes between the caliper key and the caliper at the machined lower end of the caliper anchor bracket. A screw holds the key in place to keep the key from sliding out, after the spring/key are slid in between the caliper and anchor bracket.

I've done quite a few '75-'80 Ford Granada/Mercury Monarch front disc brake swaps on early Mustangs. They have a very similar key, spring and anti-rattle clip arrangement as the Dentside F100/F150 front discs so, I'm pretty familiar with how they go together.

Now that you know where the pieces go, it should be a lot less frustrating to finish out the assembly.

Before you put the caliper on the anchor bracket, you need to coat the machined slides of the caliper so that the caliper will be free to move on the mounts as the pads wear down. If it's not lubricated, the caliper can stick/seize on the slides. However, don't use petroleum based lubricants. It can come off the slides and get on the dust boots of the calipers. This will deteriorate the boots.

A very good product designed to use for this is Sil-Glyde. Its silicone based. You can get it at NAPA.

More good info. Will have to have them in front of me to visualize the lubrication steps.
I should be finishing up the install this week or weekend as I finally found what I hope are the correct banjo bolts.

Ultraranger, the drawings helped immensely. Installed nicely. Basically, used the sly-glide wherever there was metal sliding against metal.

Glad things finally went your way.

I have an I-beam disc setup from a '77 F100 to install in my '69. I've got most of the parts bead blasted, primed and painted. It's just too hot right now here in south Arkansas to fool with it.
