I've seen many of you put in AOD trans. In your trucks. Are AODs build for pulling like C6s? I've always thought them to be more like a C4.
I presently have a C4 and would like to swop in a C6 so I can pull and haul more when needed.
But an AOD would be nice to help with MPG. Unless it can't handle pulling and hauling like a C6.
Thanks

Re: Dumb transmission question
Well if your truck is a half ton with a 302, an aod would be just fine. They recommend you not tow heavy stuff in overdrive though. Overdrive would be for light loads or commuting. C6 is heavier duty, and takes heaps of engine power just to turn the thing, almost to the point of being wasteful. But it is a good strong transmission nonetheless. If your 302 is stock I wouldn't think you would come close to needing a c6 though, as the stock 302 in these trucks leaves a lot to be desired in the power dept.
1968 F100 Took the running 390 out, and installed a Built 300 with AOD.

Re: Dumb transmission question
A built AOD could handle anything you can dish out(with a good cooler). A stock one isn't great, but 92-93 models would be the best and would probably hold up to your 302 just fine. An AOD is basically a C4 with OD and an E4OD would be the C6 overdrive version.

Re: Dumb transmission question
Yes 92 and 93 models would be the best, but don't forget that the mustang and the thunderbirds used them for those years too. The 92 and 93 trans you want came from an F150 with 5.0 engine. It has all the upgrades people do to the earlier aods, but in stock form. 2" OD Band, Wide Ratio gearset, and the strongest servo for od- the A servo. The car models from 1992 and 93 will have 1.5 inch od bands, and b servos. Even the mustang gt got the b servo. Unless you locate an aod from a thunderbird super coup, then it will have a 1.5 inch od band, and the a servo.
I had my trans guy get inside my aod and inspect it to see if it was in good shape when I got it, and to see what parts it had, and sure enough...
My AOD is from a 1993 F150, and stock from factory came with the 2"od band wide ratio gear set, and the A servo for overdrive, which was great because I didn't need to upgrade anything.

Re: Dumb transmission question
Thanks for all the info guys.
What I got out the info is:
*I was correct an aod is a c4 essentially
*A small block c6 would be over kill for my almost stock 302
*and an aod out of a 92-93 f150 is best
Would the 302 c6 combo reap my mpg lower?
Would a 302 aod combo up my mpg?
Will the specified aod be a clean swop? Or will it require modifying my drive shaft?
Sounds to me I should just stick with the 302 c4 combo.
your ?

Re: Dumb transmission question
You would have to shorted the drives haft for any OD swap.
A C6 will get worse mileage because it takes more power to turn.
An AOD should get better mileage from better gearing and a lockup torque converter.
You will also need a different kick down/TV linkage specific to an AOD and may have to modify your shifter linkage some. I'm not sure what years and parts for shifter linkage to use but the Lokar AOD kick down cable is supposedly good.
