Tapered Wedges

Post by 390bump »

I read in an article (from this web site) that the Caster can be adjusted using some "tapered wedges" under the front coil springs. Searched on-line but can not find any more info on them - who makes them where to buy them...

Also looking at changing the front coil springs. Saw Moog CC 808 springs (variable rate)... are these the best springs to get?

That would not change caster. They are used on the rear axle to adjust pinion angle. You have to roll the beam to adjust caster. It is done by bending the radius arms.

Tapered wedges under front LEAF springs will change caster(and pinion) angle on a solid axle 4wd and rear LEAF springs will change pinion angle...

All true. I didn't bring up solid axle since he said he had coils although the 4x4s were solid axle with coils on the lighter trucks.

Yeah, I guess that should be stated as just leaf sprung solid axle trucks, since it could theoretically pertain to older 2wd solid axles, but for our purposes it would pertain to F250 and F350 leaf sprung 4wd trucks. I was just trying to explain how he may have heard about it and gotten confused by the difference.

I am referring to the article in the Tech section of this website on alignment. There is info copied from a 1967 service manual regarding the I Beam suspension. The first part talks about cold bending for Camber and Caster but the last page (section 3-7) talks about Caster again and the front spring pads & using wedges:

Couple of years ago I took my truck to a specialty place that did cold bending and they set the Camber and Caster. But I do not think they twisted axle enough to increase the Caster enough. Thinking of putting in new front springs and if a wedge could be put in at the same time for more Caster than I would like to try it. Article seems like they are talking about front coil springs :? Still confused...

That's speaking about leaf spring wedges.

You guys must be right and they are referring to front leaf springs from 4wd or HD trucks... They sure had me fooled since all the pictures show front coils :hmm: Thanks for clearing that up!
