GM power steering pump

Post by abyars111 »

I've heard some folks mention using a GM power steering pump. Has anyone done this? What are the benefits? How would one accomplish this? What donor vehicle would the pump come from? I don't have any problems with my PS, I'm just curious.

What engine do you have? Lincoln used the Saginaw pump on their 460 engines.

I have a 390. I've found a few aftermarket brackets.

Not sure if the vans even came with fe engines... But it is my understanding that they all came with Saginaw pumps. Could be a good place to source the brackets.

I'm gonna swap to a Saginaw (canteen) pump using CVF brackets on my 4WD '73. The Ford pump, at least the one I have sourced from a 360FE, 2WD '75 F150, doesn't put out enough pressure for my 78/79 steering box. It's "lazy".... the RPMs need to come up before there is 100% power steering.

I sourced the pump off a 76 GMC 4x4. The Saginaws are tuned pressure-wise by GM according to the weight of the vehicle so it is best to source one from a similarly sized/weighted vehicle.

HIO, do you know if the pressure side fitting on the pump is different from Ford's hose?

I don't recall the fitting size but the guys at PSC Motorsports will know... I'm planning to get the hose and field-serviceable fittings from them.
