Unbelievable!
Working on my newly acquired 68 short step side, keep finding things the previous owners messed up or missed. First I got the truck for some work I had done on a goldwing, previous owners thought the 240 had a dead hole. Checked compression, 150+ across the board. Had new cap, rotor, plugs and wires, checked the distributor, one slot on the ignition conversion broken, no #4 fire. Put points back in, runs perfect. Only back brakes working, centered brake valve, great brakes now (for drums). Still steers awful, check all parts, tight like new, check part #s, axles are on the wrong sides! Guess that will be today's job. Got to love PO's!

Re: Unbelievable!
well I bet the guy u bought your truck from is a relative of the guy of where I bought my truck from
... a lot was Hokey-Dokeyed on it I fixed 90% of them only things left is the bad paint he did and the right trans in it!!! Cruise-O-Matic from a 67 t-bird and not a c6 with my 390!! so the trans just sat on the crossmember unbolted to it !!

Re: Unbelievable!
Welcome to the Ford truck world. Just to get you up to speed, the term 'stepside' is a registered trademark of Ch*vy and doesn't apply to Fords. They have stepsides and fleetsides, we have flaresides and stylesides.

Yep, I'm happy, seems PO's usually patch to cover bad work, not screw up to cover an easy fix. Disassembled truck yesterday, all bushings, kingpins ect. were new or like new, guess he just goofed up reassembling. 3 hours, a good strong friend and a couple of beers, she steers like new! Now to get rid of that stupid 10" steering wheel.

Re: Unbelievable!
Years back I acquired a 65 Ford Pkup and shortly after broke a axle while entering I-5. PO had welded it back together when it had broke on him.
Oh, I guess I qualify as a PO, what with all the Ford Trucks and other vehicles that have passed thru my hands. Oh Oh my ears r burning someone out there that now owns one I drove is talking about the PO.

Re: Unbelievable!
Yeah, it certainly made things interesting. He used the truck on a farm and from what I can tell, he had some kind of a sprayer in the back. Anyway, to keep the crops and weeds out of the fan belt, he welded a sheet of 1/8" steel between the frame rails. This extended from just in front of the oil pan to the front bumper. It was also welded to the front bumper!ToughOldFord wrote:Nitekruizer wrote:70shortwide wrote:Your getting off easy! seems like all the PO misinformation costs me more instead of less!LOL! The bumper itself was broken and then welded back together at the left side bumper bolts. The weld later let go and the left end of the bumper fell off. I couldn't replace the bumper because the remaining section was still welded to my truck. I drove to a local welding shop and asked him to remove it and the steel plate in front of my engine. He agreed, but only if I accepted that he wouldn't guarantee that my truck wouldn't go up in flames from him using a torch that close to my engine.

This was before I rebuilt my engine. I can't imagine what kind of PITA it would have been trying to remove the engine with that steel sheet welded there, so, one way or another, it had to go. It just goes to show that there's one thing you can always be sure of whenever you buy one of these old trucks, or any project truck/car for that matter, and that is that you're always going to have to undo some of the PO's "repairs".
