the bell housing is cracked...
it's a 1969 F-250... its so grimy underneath that I cant read any information off the transmission to tell what kind it is... my guess is since the C-6's were pretty prevalent during that time... it's probably a c-6.
Any ideas where I can buy one that isnt a racing c-6? And didn't they use that same c-6 until the 90's?

Re: it appears I need a new transmission
The C6 was used from 1966 to 1996, but there are a lot of variations of it...You will need the tag info to pin it down..I should be on the servo cover on the side of the trans, a cover that is held on by 4 bolts........or on one of the extension housing bolts.. it is a metal tag about 5/8 x 3" in size with info on it........Donnie

If you go on craigslist, you can find shops in SoCal that offer rebuilt C6 transmissions for ~$500. I've been tempted to give one of them a call, but I've decided to take the plunge and rebuild an extra one I have. I'll probably spend half that for the rebuild kit and the hard parts, but I hope to learn something from it (I'll probably learn that it was a stupid idea to rebuild it myself). I also don't have a cracked bell housing, so that definitely helps. There was a rebuilt C6 in Victorville last week for $450, including torque converter, but the photos showed it sitting on the garage floor, so you're kind of rolling the dice on that one. 'Sides, it might have a different bell housing and tailshaft.jaytay13 wrote:Any ideas where I can buy one that isnt a racing c-6?
By the way, the pan on the C6 is kind of a square with a rectangular bite taken out of a corner. You should be able to find a photo/drawing on the net, and compare it to your pan. Or you can post a pic of your pan on the forum. Here's from the tech section of Fordification:

Good luck,

Re: it appears I need a new transmission
Not that this will be that useful compared to the other info but I've always heard the C6 has a large pan while a C4 has a smaller pan on it. Ive been trying to find the tag on mine and its so grimey under there that I can't find it either. Between leaking fluid and road grime it'll be impossible to find without a cleaning too.

Re: it appears I need a new transmission
the pan is shaped like a C6 and has the same dimensions as a C6.... was under there 45 minutes trying to clean everything and still couldn't find a tag....
If i know the engine, the vehicle, and the designation, can i not buy a C6 that will fit those things? what other differences are there?

Re: it appears I need a new transmission
Output shaft length. I have a C6 with a long tailshaft, and I want to rebuild a C6 that currently has a short tailshaft. I'm now chasing the parts down to change tailshafts. I think the only difference is the tailshaft and the housing, but you have to take the tranny apart to make the tailshaft swap. In my case, I need to use the long tailshaft, or the engine/tranny will have to move back, and might not clear my low tranny hump (my truck originally came with the Cruise-o-Matic, which was swapped out long ago; I think the short tailshaft C6 originally came in trucks, and the long in cars, but I'm not 100% sure on this).jaytay13 wrote:If i know the engine, the vehicle, and the designation, can i not buy a C6 that will fit those things? what other differences are there?
I believe that the 4x4 tranny is different from the 2WD. Not sure what mods would be required to make the swap.
The grooves on the output shaft can be different, which might throw your speedo off. You can change the gear on the speedo cable to get it close to where it was.
I think the end of the output shaft can be different, which means that it connects to different types of u-joints (slip joint vs ???; I can never remember).
These are the differences that I know about. Hope that helps.

Re: it appears I need a new transmission
If the trans still works why dont you just have your case welded up
Mine has a patch on it about 6 inches long and 1 inch wide
Where the torque converter blew up ( sometimes a 4500 stall does strange things)
now I run a 3500 stall converter and have not had a problem with the case breaking
And yea you will have to pull the trans to have it welded

I know this is going to sound strange... but Ive only had it a couple weeks... and Id been tinkering with the engine.. seemed to run fine... had that hesitation that everyone seems to be talking about... but ran strong... everything was great... then as I was getting ready to pull it into the complex.. it starts backfiring and bucking... I came to a stop... ran fine... started to go... slowly... was fine... then as it started to shift... bucking and backfiring... So I parked it... crawled underneath.. and found a chunk missing out of the bell housing and a 12" crack running from that missing chunk....
I dont necessarily know for sure that the transmission is shot... but when I described it to people (my dad - a couple mechanic friends in other states) - they all seemed to agree that was most likely the problem...
So I dont think it works... and it might not fix my problem... but with the chunk missing and the crack, I thought it was probably something I was going to have to do anyway.
