valve body leakage

Post by tatonka »

Have a 1972 3/4 ford camper special , it has a 6 sec delay in the morning going into Drive. When checking fluid in morning and not starting motor . The transmission fill reading shows way overfill
after starting it and putting it in drive , the fluid pumps back in and the fill level reads correct. The transmission mechcanic said they can go along time that way.
But Im going to take it on a 500 mile trip one way and a week later 500 miles back , carrying a camper ( small one with no ref or shower ) .
What do you all think ?, opinions?

Your converter is draining back, you can drive it that way for a long time if all else is good...Just start the engine & don't select a gear...just let it run in neutral until the converter fills.... It is good for your engine too, the 10 second idle.....I assume you have a rev delay also???? You can install a check valve in the cooler line & that will some times stop the drain back......Any good trans shop will have an anti drain back valve........Donnie

The correct way to measure the tranny fluid level is to take a ten-minute drive, then park the truck level and put it in neutral. Chock the tires, then check the fluid level.

Joe, sorry to dispute your post, but only some Chry products suggest checking the fluid in NEUTRAL as the converter does not fill on 727', 518's
904's and some others.. He was trying to find out why he has this delay........He did exactly what I would have advised him to to do to qualify this problem............Check your dipstick, does it not say "check in park" ?...............Donnie

Sorry for the misinformation. I coulda sworn I read in one of the Ford books to park in Neutral. I'll have to check my dipstick tonight. Thanks for setting me straight, Donnie.
