C4 transmission question

Post by halfpint33 »

First off transmissions are not my area of expertise.Secondly this is my first Ford so it's a learning curve all around for me  I bought a '70 1/2 ton from a friend of mine last summer for $300.It had been his dads truck. His dad parked it in '06 due to health problems and it set in the same spot for 6 yrs until I bought it..When he parked it they said the trans was slipping. The trans is a C4.Finally got around to messing with it awhile back and found the trans gasket was leaking.Changed it and the filter. When I changed the filter a small short rod fell out.Now it stalls when goin into reverse and if I floor it when in drive it slowly takes off after stalling a second or two.Do you fellas think I put the shaft in the wrong way and that is causing my problems or that the trans is actually toasted?

Thanks

The piece that you are speaking of is a relief valve, VERY IMPORTANT...if you have "floored it" too many times with out this valve or with it installed incorrectly.....you have toasted the trans..........With a little luck, drop the pan, drop the screen & put the valve into the spring, put the assy up into the valve body with the big head of the valve in first,,, it seals an outlet & the spring holds it in place....
HOW did you put it in & how many floored starts have you tried ? Don't feel bad , a lot of guy's miss this piece completely & fry the tranny on the road test, thinking that flooring it will help........Donnie

One of Ford's better ideas, changing the valve from being retained by a pin to being retained by the filter.

The filter holds TWO pieces in the hole as noted by Donnie. Valve goes above the spring and the tail of the valve fits into the spring. You need BOTH, but from your description it appears that you ONLY have the valve.
