3 speed problem- grinding on deceleration in 2nd gear

Post by muchtomydelight »

It almost sounds like a clutch on the rivits spinning against the flywheel, but it only does it when i let off the gas in 2nd gear. even if i only let off a little, it will. the more i drag the engine up, the more noise and the more destructive it sounds. I havent checked the dope yet. any ideas or thoughts as to what it could be? all of the synchros are in working order and the clutch disk has 10k miles on it. it only slips in 3rd when i really punch it at 30 mph. If the tranny is toast, i am sure i can get one from the yard for $50. they have a pile of 'em all with the milages on the little tags.

My guess is a bearing going bad in the tranny. Let us know if you find out what it was. Good luck

it does sound like a bearing, but it only does it when i let off the gas and only in 2nd gear. Wouldnt it do it more often if it were a bearing?

no, it won't sound that way in all gears. I had a bad bearing in my 435. It would only make noise when I let off the gas in 4th gear.

Get some more opinions first. I am no genius by any means.

well, the slipping clutch is from a leaking rear main. I am seriously thinging about just new rings and bearings for now and build my dream mill later on. And yes, the transmisisons are everywhere. I just welded my shift handle back together too... one loose bolt and it finally wore through.

I FIXED IT!!!!!

turns out that both the tranny and the rear end had no lube. Put some dope and 25% lucas oil stabilizer, and she is silent again. after driving around for about a month with no dope in either, they both should have grenaded themeselves. they dont build em like they used to.

Yea, what's "dope?" I'm with Customs & Border Protection. When we find dope in differentials and transfer cases we normally handcuff the guy and haul him off to jail!
