Three Speed Manual to C6 Questions?

Post by FloridaPhil »

A couple of questions please before I go any further. I am in the middle of converting my 1968 Ranger 360 short bed from a three speed manual to a 390 w. a C6 automatic. I already removed both cross members and cut the floor for a removable high hump. I also installed an automatic shift steering column with power steering. The new 390 is sitting in the truck bolted to the stock engine mounts. I installed a bare C6 case in the truck to see if everything lines up correctly and if all the linkage I have works. The C6 case I installed is a truck 2WD transmission with the short tail shaft and the bolt-on yoke. The C6 case bolted up to the 390 fine. I used my original stock 3 speed manual transmissions cross member and mount. Everything bolts up OK except that I need to drill two new holes in the frame to move the transmission cross member back about 2 inches. Also, I want to use a passenger car C6 with the long tail shaft and a slip yoke type drive shaft. My questions are - Is drilling the two new holes in the frame the right thing to do or do I need an automatic cross member? Will I have a problem using a long tail housing C6 transmission in my truck? Will all this work, or am I missing something. I'm about to order my new C6 and I don't want to order the wrong thing or have to reengineer things in the middle of an installation. Thanks!

Phil,
The existing crossmember worked just fine for me when I changed from my four speed to my C-6. Different engine but it should work. :2cents:

Thanks. I'm pretty sure I am good to go. I may use a short tail housing truck C6 instead. Different driveshaft...
