Scraping Noise

I have a 69 Bump with a 240 straight six and a T18, and it has been making a scraping sound which has recently gotten worse. It sounds like the flywheel is scraping but I don't know what else it could be. There's no slip in the clutch and it shifts just fine (except into reverse, but that's another issue). Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

Check U joints.

Also, check the mounting bolts on the starter. I had a recent noise, and the starter mounting bolts had backed off, so the Bendix drive was rubbing against the flywheel.

have you put you head under it to see whats going on?? running or not

Yes I have looked under it. My U joints are solid, motor mounts are solid, and the starter brackets solid. I can't see any obvious signs of stress or contact anywhere which leads me to believe it is an internal problem. And when I get under it while it's running the noise magically disappears (Of course).

does it make the noise running while its at a stop or only driving down the road????

ok do u have disk brakes in the front??? If so is the dust shield rubbing on the disk???

maybe a bad bearing in the trans going out??

or there is some thing rubbing on the flywheel you'er seeing

maybe the throw out bearing is out of ajustment and riding on the pressure plate making the noise??

It makes the noise when I first start and drive it, then it stops. My gut tells me it's a worn bearing in the transmission, because the sound seem's to come from between the firewall and gear lever. Which is why I immediately think clutch or flywheel. I think I'm just going to have to bite the bullet and spend my weekend under my rig and at the transmission shop.

Sounds like you need to get a stethoscope. Ten bucks at AutoZone.

Figured it out. The previous owner chewed up a starter and there were remnants of the teeth in the bell housing scraping up against the flywheel. As the flywheel turned it kicked it back into the starter, so the noise would subside, and when the starter engaged it kicked the shards back into the bell housing. Rotated the crank a couple times and scraped the bottom of the bell housing with welding rod to clear anything else out and problem solved!
Thankfully I had the help of a machinist to do some CSI work on the metal shards.

well glad you found the problem and it was an easy fix with little to no money loss...

I had one of those come and go noises too. Turned out to be a bad speaker the previous owner wired up behind the seat of the truck. Glad you found your problem.

Turns out I didn't find the problem, I solved a problem just not the right one.
The scraping noise returned and is much more intense now but I have pinned it down to the pilot bearing. If I engage the clutch it goes away, I disengage it and the noise comes right back. Is there anything else I could be overlooking?

Check the trans fluid level. If the noise is there in neutral with your foot off of the clutch but not there when you depress the clutch pedal then your noise is most likely the trans front bearing.

Sounds like you found it. Perfect description of a throw-out bearing. I'd replace the pilot and throw at a minimum.
