Need help with 4x4????s

Post by gregamorton »

Guys I have never been big on 4x4s as they break and it can get expensive. My project is not a ford but I am hoping yall 4x4 guys will know or be able to help. I have a 1968 scout 800 with 152 big four with 3speed and twin stick dana 18. The front and rear are dana 27s with 4.27 gears. I am not running a body at all and am going to set the truck up like a buggy with 4 seats and a roll bar setup. The scout is rolling on 36" iroks now and I have a set of 40" iroks to go on 17" wheels. My goal for this setup is for me and my wife and two girls to take it to the river to run small trails and ride on the sand dues. I am hoping to run in 2wd low most of the time and putt around. This is where my main help is needed! I want my rear to be locked and the dana 27 does not have a posi now. I am wanting it to be stout with no issues while we are out and rolling. I am thinking about building a ford 9" and run a full spool. My problem is I cant get a set of 4.27 gears but have found some 4.30s. Can I run the 4.30s with 4.27s in the front?? I have seen 4.09s and 4.10s but thats only .01 difference. Thanks for the help in advance, Greg.

Greg, it will be fine for what you're doing to run 4.27's and 4.30's. I've run 3.54's in a sterling rear with a 3.50 Dana 44 front and the mismatch wasn't noticeable.

Consider how many people run tires that are more than an 1/8" different in diameter front to back.

I was hoping for that. I just need to find a narrow 9" that will work better than my bump rear ends. I think when I measured yesterday the bump rear end would make it a foot wider.

Look for an early Bronco 9" (66-77). They are close to the width you want.

not many bronco's in my area and if the prices are high. I might just go with the wide rear as it just does not matter except for looks! Plus I need to keep the big bolt pattern.

I was talking to my friend about that but I have never done that. If welding up with rod what rod should I use for best penetration? How do you get all the slag out and pieces to make sure you get no binding up of other rotating parts? And last how much area needs to be welded up to make sure it does not break loose?
