in the above link. at the bottom of the page. on the zbar is supposed to be some sort of spacer for the clutch fork rod to ride on. it looks like part number 356573-s
is that part one of those plastic spacer things like on the other linkages? or is it something else? if it is one of those plastic bushings i can cut down one i have here. it is too long. im pretty sure that is what this part is. am i correct?

Hi Fordman!
On my truck, the end of the clutch release rod that's connected to the Z-bar was sandwiched there between two thin, metal "wave" washers, then held in place with the hitch pin. There was no plastic bushing there.
I have some photos of the assembly from when I first took it apart that might help--I'm looking for those now.

Here's the assembly before I took it apart. Note the plastic bushing where the clutch control rod goes, but not at the end you're asking about.
Here's a close-up of that "wave" washer. It's sandwiched between two of them.

When I put all this together recently, I naturally wanted to use all new fasteners to make it nice looking. But I couldn't find a source for those "wave" washers. McMaster has lots of "wave" washers, but none that particular size. And the "wave" washers I did manage to find typically had but a SINGLE wave in them, not several like these ones Ford used.
In the end, I just cleaned them with a bunch of brake cleaner and shot them with some Eastwood Rust Encapsulator from a spray bomb. I'll post photos of the finished product if you're interested (let me know).
It would be interesting to have confirmation from another member that the photos I've posted show show an accurate factory assembly. It's possible, just on general principles, that this part of my truck was re-done at some time in the past and changed around.

the thing is that rod eyehole just doesnt fit tightly enough onto the zbar assembly. for me. there is enough room to put one of those plastic bushings on there. i know it isnt worn because i have two zbars and two rods. both fit the same on each other.those wave washers probably are original.

I know what you mean. The eyehole on my pushrod didn't fit tightly on the shaft either. It was fairly loose actually.
Isn't it true though, that there's always pressure on that connection, pressing towards the back of the truck? It's not like one of the pieces of linkage where it's both pushed and pulled--this one is always pushed (just to varying degrees). Maybe this makes a perfect fit less critical.
I also thought about putting a plastic bushing in there though. I guess you could just find one that fit and cut it to the right depth to slide on the rod.

mine sits in there loosely. and when i would push in on the clutch it will work back and forth.

Hey Fordman, I know what you mean. I actually didn't stare at that place while the clutch was being worked to see if it wiggled around or not. If mine does, maybe I'll put some bushing in there too.

so far i have looked at lmc dc and npd and none of them show any plastic bushing in there. so i guess that is the way ti is suppose to be is without one. lmc ws the only one that showed a picture of the whole setup though. no one else sold any minor parts other than lmc.

Maybe you adapt a door hinge bushing?

FWIW, my '63 Plymouth is assembled exactly like that. No bushing, some slop in the eye hole, and the wavy washers to keep it from flopping around. I'm going to guess that's factory for that era, there probably was just no reason for tight tolerances there.

Hey BobbyFord! I'm not sure about other names for the washers, but McMaster-Carr calls them "Wave" washers, at least. Here's a photo of one from their catalog.

I found a matching hitch pin in a NAPA misc' hitch pin combo box; I couldn't find a matching hitch pin at the hardware store.

Found this old thread... I just had my Z-bar linkage pop off when driving the truck today... the cotter pins I was using from LMC are too thin and it must of broke off... Used a pair of vise grips for a quick fix till I got back to work and found some wire... Anyway, will look for something like the original 72025S cotter pins... Had to order lost bushing from LMC again. Don't really like the design with these weak cotter pins. Hole too small to use the larger pins I have in my tool box...

Metric term is Wave Washer. VW & Euro manufacturers use them all over the vehicles as a lockwasher so you should find a Metric size that is very close in size as it is not critical anyway. All it was was an antirattle item.
