Good evening!
In the 1972 shop manual, in the section describing install the FE flywheel, it says to use "oil-resistant sealer" on the flywheel mounting bolts.
What is this?
Will thread lock work? And if yes, would medium or high strength be better?
Thanks very much!

What is "oil-resistant sealer?" Is this thread lock?

Re: What is "oil-resistant sealer?" Is this thread lock?
I thought about this last night and realized that they probably mean that black, sticky stuff made by Permatex. They're probably trying to keep oil that's on the engine side of the flywheel from creeping through the threads and contaminating the clutch disk.
Is this true? Or do they really mean thread lock?
Thank you!

Re: What is "oil-resistant sealer?" Is this thread lock?
When I was at Kragen this morning I asked the guy in there about the sealer, on the off chance that he'd know what it was. He said that it's thread lock, and I should use the "red" thread lock on those bolts.
But I read on the back of the package of the "red" stuff that it's supposed to hold up to torque values in the range of 150-200 ft/lbs, which is WAY over the torque values for these bolts. So I think it would be foolish to use the red stuff there! Maybe the "blue" stuff, which is supposed to be in the 50 ft/lb range, if I remember correctly.
Does anybody know if this is the right stuff to use?
Thanks very much!

Re: What is "oil-resistant sealer?" Is this thread lock?
I've just read the Permatex Threadlocker instructions more carefully, and now see that their breakaway specs are in inch pounds, not foot pounds! So the red stuff should be right for these bolts. It has a breakaway torque of around 36 foot pounds.
I also see that although Permatex makes thread sealer, the thread lock compound also seals.
I'll go ahead with the red threadlocker for these bolts.
Thanks!
