Does the oval shaped hole in the bell housing take a plug?

Post by robroy »

Good evening!

While putting a new finish on my bell housing I noticed an oval shaped hole above the output area. Here it is:

What is the purpose of this hole? And is that supposed to have a rubber plug in it?

Mine had no plug when I took it apart but it could have been eaten by Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.

Thanks!

I'm not sure why it's there, but I'm pretty sure it's just left open, no grommet or plug.

Hey Keith thanks! That certainly could be. And as you know, because of the way the transmission meets the back of the housing, that opening seems somewhat protected from grasshoppers getting in there. Yet it's still a significant opening in something that, other than this, is all closed up.

Thanks for the replies Fordman and Ezernut9mm!

Fordman, it's good to know that another person doesn't have a plug on the housing! Now we're three. Odds are there was nothing there from the factory, but naturally I'd still like to hear from more folks.

Ezernut9mm, that's how mine looked as well when I ripped it apart! There was literally a solid inch of caked on, burned oil and dirt back there in that area. At first I tried cleaning it with solvent, but quickly switched to a screwdriver to scoop all that stuff off!

It's just a vent, I figure. :)
I bought my pickup new and was the first one to take
it apart and it was open just like your picture shows. :)
The Shop Manual doesn't show anything plugging it either.

Hey Fordman and Alvin, thanks for the replies!

OK I'm now pretty convinced that it's supposed to be left open now!

Thanks again!
