Electric Fuel Pump
Does anyone have any expirence with using an electric fuel pump on our trucks. I'm begging to think my fuel pumps going out since I'll have it running then bam!! no fuel. So I was wondering do I need a pump with certian specs? My trucks got a stock 302 and I was also wondering do I need a regulator or anything like that. Anyones advice or expirence with an electric pump will be very helpful.

Re: Electric Fuel Pump
I ran a electric fuel pump for a month or so on my 390. It worked great. It was a low pressure pump from Napa. I was having problems with my mechanical pump which turned out to be a very dirty gas tank. After I figured it out I went back to the mechanical for no real reason. I can't remember the specs but the psi rating is some where between 4 and 7 I think for the electric pump that you'll want to run.

Re: Electric Fuel Pump
I am running a small Purolator electric fuel pump mounted on the outer frame rail (drivers side) underneath the in cab tank. They run about $40 and are simple to install. I use it as a back up to the mechanical pump to help it get started. I have it wired to the ignition, so it only runs when the ignition is on and a toggle switch underneath the steering column so I can switch it off when I don't need it.

Re: Electric Fuel Pump
Carter P4070. 3/8 line to the front. Holley bypass regulator & 5/16 return line. Pump is wired thru a 30 amp relay. I know this all sounds like overkill, but if flat works. Period. The P4070 will run at about 6-8psi if unregulated. The Holley bypass unit dropped it to 3-4psi out of the box.
As a metter of fact, i AM trying to keep up with the Jones'

Re: Electric Fuel Pump
I have a electric fuel pump on my truck. Mounted it on frame about under the seat, the closer to the tank the better.Use a inline filter before the pump and one at the carb.I bought mine at Advance $40+tax it puts out 9-10lbs.Iuse a adjustable pressure regulater form Advance $25,set at 5lbs I have mine wired direct to battery with a shut off switch and a 20amp fuse.I should wire to the ignition switch instead of battery.I forgot to turn it off an ran down my battery.

Re: Electric Fuel Pump
I may be putting an electric fuel pump on my truck this weekend. That is the same basic setup I was thinking about doing with it wired to a switch, so it is just used as back up for the mechanical pump, like you said.farmtruckman wrote:I am running a small Purolator electric fuel pump mounted on the outer frame rail (drivers side) underneath the in cab tank. Did you have to run a bypass line or something in order to do that?? Because I'm confused as to how the mechanical pump will pull the fuel through the electrical pump if its not turned on...
Thanks,
Frank

Re: Electric Fuel Pump
Yeah I'm kinda interested in doing that too. I bought a Mr/Gasket pump but I haven't felt like putting it on. Do they have to be close to the tank or can I put it under the hood?FRANKdaTANK wrote:I may be putting an electric fuel pump on my truck this weekend. Re: Electric Fuel Pump
When the electric pump is off, it is in the open position so fuel passes through unobstructed. I mounted the switch underneath the dash on the lip to the right of the steering column. Some guys run a light so they know that it is on, but most of the time, when it is running, you can hear it clicking.
Good Luck.

Re: Electric Fuel Pump
! have mine under the hood on my 80 Fiesta and it works alright. But is recommended to be close to the tank, they push fuel better than pull it.You don't have to run a return line, but It helps keep the pump cooler. I don't have one on either car or truck and never have had a problem.
