How do I easily remove the yokes from the T18 and Dana 60?

Post by robroy »

Hi Folks!

What's the best way to remove the yokes from my T18 and Dana 60?

The yoke on the T18 was just put on a few weeks ago so it might be easy. The yoke on the Dana 60 was probably put on in July 1972, so I'm not sure about that one.

Do these typically pull right off with no trouble? Or are they sometimes completely fused to the shafts?

Thanks very much!

A socket and a wrench

Should just tap off once the nut is off.

Hey Greg thanks! I'd heard that these sometimes are pretty frozen on the splines, but maybe that doesn't happen too often. I'll give it a whirl and save my dynamite purchase for later.

Thanks!!!

Hey Greg! You were right--the yoke on the transmission came right off.

I'm having a little trouble getting the yoke off of the Dana 60 though. It seems like it's a 1 5/16" nut, but my 1 5/16" socket is to fat to fit on it. It hits the body of the yoke before engaging enough to get a good bite on the nut. Tomorrow I'm going to try to find a place that has a thinner 1 5/16" socket.

Is this a known issue, or do lots of sockets fit that nut with no problems?

Thanks very much!

it could be the thickness of the socket i have ran onto that before on other bolts and nuts in hard to reach places. i have a 7/16" and a 1/2" wrench that isn't the same size on both ends. it says its the same size on itbut its off by just enough you cant use them on the open end. they just slip real easily around the nut.

Hey Fordman! Yes I think that's probably it. The socket is on the thick end of the spectrum I think. It's a 12 point with a 3/4" drive. I'd like to find a 6 point with a 1/2" drive, but I'm not sure if I can find one of those anywhere on a Saturday around here.

Thanks!

Hey Dustin thanks for your reply!

Thanks for letting me know that this is supposed to be as difficult as it seems!

I don't have a working lathe but I can use an air powered grinder to do a crude yet effective job.

Regarding the RTV, I noticed some gummy, black seal stuff under the same nut on the T18's yoke--I guess that's what that was. It looked distinctly like the gum tissue inside a dog's mouth. I'll be sure to put it back together with some of this (the RTV, not a dog's gums)!

Thanks again Dustin!!!

Hey Alvin thanks for the words of wisdom! I see your point. I should try to do a good job of this from the start instead of getting it all messed up only to try to "fix" it after wards (once it has tons of ugly facets).

I might be able to spin the socket by using my air powered wrench, then, meanwhile, hit it on the side with a separate air powered grinder bit.

Thanks again Alvin!

LOL :)
Yeah, sounds like that could be cool if it works out. :)
Since it's set in a floppy+square holder not sure it's going to work real nice,
but would certainly be worth a try. :)

Hold it at an angle for best results.
Angle it the other way if it starts getting lumpy. (I think of a road grader;)

I do that when hollow grinding my knife blades.

It isn't that hard to turn it by hand and stop and look at it ever once in a while.
You need to stop and dip it in water ever so often anyway. :)
Try not to turn it colors and it'll be ok. :)

If is starts getting a little lopsided concentrate on those thicker area and once
it's looking round again just go back to spinning it as you grind. It's kind of like
painting and how you let off the trigger after you're past the part and back on
the trigger just before you're back over the part. I know that painting example
doesn't make any sense. :) But it might after you get to spinning the socket and
grinding? {shrug}

Hey Fordman! Hugh (my father) still has lots of Proto tools that he bought in the 1960's and earlier, and I use them every weekend, so I guess they're OK! Lots of them sat out in the rain all winter various years too.

After looking at the photo again, it actually doesn't look like I could even shave much off of that Proto socket at all. It's very thin already. Hopefully it'll slip right on there!

Agreed! :)

Sure enough, that Proto socket went right on the nut with no issues, and the air wrench took it off easily!

I tried at first using a long breaker bar with a pipe on it, but it was just rocking the truck backwards by turning the wheels. The air wrench did the trick.

Thanks for all the advice!
