Vaccum Leak

Post by JMcTurnan »

So I put my spacer plate back on my carb, I didn't have it on cuz my old carb seemed to not work with it. But I hear this whistle sound, which wasn't their before. I put a towel over the carb, so I know its not at the butterfly. Its none of the vaccum port on manifold or carb, but its coming from the rear end of the carb to manifold to tranny. I think it may be the gasket, but I dont think so. What do you think is most likely, I retightened manifold bolts, and carb bolts. Im not really sure where it's coming from.

:hmm: :hmm:
could be the wrong gasket.
spacer has the PVC coming out the back? Be sure that gasket goes out far enough to seal between the spacer and the intake.
Both your "spacer to intake" and "spacer to carb" gaskets look the ones in this pic?

Yes, except one the middle was split into a 2barrel instead of 2 individuals. My cousin said its my intake manifold gasket, its towards the exhaust port, Im burning gas and its running like crap. So does that sound right? When i install the gasket, do the numbers on gasket go up or down? And do i put sealent on both sides for waterports, or the side of the block.

it could be a warped spacer plate. try a thicker gasket or use more than one of the thin ones. edit: i think there is suppose to be a gasket on both top and bottom of the spacer plate.

Yea we have that, the one on bottom was thick. But it was starting to rip so we removed it. I made my own from cardboard.

Cardboard? I even double checked the post date and it was the 31st and not the 1st so I will bite. That would be why it is whistling. Cardboard would be way too porous plus if it is corrugated.

also I believe the thick gasket should be between the carb and the spacer. Thin gasket between the spacer and the intake.

Iv'e got a 302 w/ a 2100 and rebuilt the carb recently, Both of my gaskets was the same in thickness in the kit as well as the old ones i took off. You should not use any sealant on those. I would get another set. The tabs sticking out on gaskets go facing the back of the carb. Look at your kit it will show you which way the gaskets go as far as #s up or down. I believe there are holes in the gaskets that have to go a certian way that operate your choke pull off via vacuum from manifold and spacer base thru carb. :2cents:

Yea, we used that to see if it was the gaskets. When i went to buy some, they were different for top and bottom. But I guess I could just buy 2 of the same one and try that.

Don't know if yours is the same but my whistling vacuum leak was the tomato can.
It had rusted in such a way it looked like it'd been cut with a can opener, see it?
I just soldered it shut. :)

I couldn't locate the sound it came from everywhere, and it would come and go too.
I bought a vacuum pump/tester and found it with that thing. :)

ps- I thought it was the carburetor gaskets too... :/

Bought new ones, soaked super glue into the edges of them all the way around,
made aluminum shims to cover the gaskets when the super glue didn't do it.
See the "3 Horses" beer can on the upper gasket? :)
...and the thicker shim on top of the lower gasket?
pps- I put the beer can label-up on purpose because I thought it was funny. ;)

there's been many threads on searching out and locating vacuum leaks. There are simple and (mostly) safe ways to pinpoint a vacuum leak. Spraying starting fluid around isn't one of them.
Great ideas have always encounter violent opposition from mediocre minds.

Yes it is the original carburetor that came with the pickup. :)
It's a 2100 with -all- the choke problems fixed! LOL :)
(nothing wrong with a choke a hacksaw and hoof rasp can't fix;)

Just walked back into the door from finding another 390 that turned out to be a 360.
I hurt another guy. :/ I believe a lot of that business originated with the salesmen.

Anyway, my pickup starts and runs and sounds sooooo good, it's cool just to drive it. :)

Alvin, Norton flags that site as "known security risk".

JMcTurnan,

Cardboard will not work for base plate gaskets; in fact it is not a very good gasket for anything.

Autolite/Motorcraft carps are particular about gaskets and universal ones will not work, they should look like the ones pictured above, if they don't they are probably not right.

Several of us have tried to explain politely that you need to try to keep related issues in a coherent tread and respond to question posed in a factual manner in order for us to assist you. Yet you have at least three threads going on about the same carburetor. We’d appreciate it if you would also keep in mind that the way that one speaks in day to day language with ones friends or coworkers doesn’t necessarily translate into the written word well.
