Transmission fittment question
I was offered an operational automatic from a 240 or 300 six cylinder truck for $40. My questions are: Will it work behind my 302? Is the bellhousing the same? Would it be a c4 or FMX? Would it go in without mods to my truck? What years and engine size transmissions would fit without mods?

Re: Transmission fittment question
it will fit 240 300 289 302 351w and 351c. it will nto fit 351m unless the 351m has been drilled out on the back to accept the smallblock bellhousing pattern. the pan size will tell you which trans it is.

So far as I know, this transmission won't easily work in an F-600.Joshpow wrote:I was offered an operational automatic from a 240 or 300 six cylinder truck for $40. Re: Transmission fittment question
The local tranny shop has a 73 dent with a 300-6 & a C-6 sitting out back just rotting away, running over with old tranny cases. He wants 500 bucks for the truck. He wont sell me the stinking tranny, only the whole truck. He said it would fit my 302 no problems.
I would cabbage onto it....

Buy the truck, sell the old tranny cases, then use the money to buy a transmission to fit your truck.papabug71 wrote:The local tranny shop has a 73 dent with a 300-6 & a C-6 sitting out back just rotting away, running over with old tranny cases. Re: Transmission fittment question
I found out it is a 78 or 79 with a 300 six. My biggest question is the tailshaft. Mine is a short bolt on yoke type. I am most worried if the newer transmissions are the same. Thanks guys. I guess if nothing else, it'd be a good core for future transmission purchase. That way, I got a transmission to use for core before I take my truck apart. I still ain't sure the transmission's condition. He said it had sat for several months and worked when he drove the truck in.

Re: Transmission fittment question
the only thing i can think of is driveshaft length and the slip joint vs bolt on yoke like you said. i do not kno wif that c6 would be as tough or set up to be a heavy duty type as one from a smallblock enigne or not. but if it came out of a truck it would be more heavy duty than a car type trans would be. do you need a core for hard parts? a trans sittign usually won't go bad. the front and rear seals should be changed before reinstallation but it should still run fine.

For what it's worth...
My 68 came from the factory with a 240/c4 combo. The 240 was toast when I got the truck so I yanked it and put a 72 302 right in it's place. Bolted right up and worked just fine. Still in the truck ten years later.

The tranny in the parts truck will fit my truck. He is just using the truck as a junk pile & the cases dont come with the truck. That was 5 or 6 years ago when I talked to him about it & the truck is still sitting in the same spot..

Re: Transmission fittment question
If you haven't done a lot of parts swapping on Fords, don't ever take it for granted something will be an easy swap when you start mixing parts. And sometimes the parts you get aren't what they are supposed to be.
I traded for a couple 300-6 engines and got the flywheel/bell housing with them. Well the guy must have got his piles mixed up because I ended up with a 289 flywheel. Sure it would have bolted right on but a zero balance engine with a 30 ounce flywheel wouldn't have been happy and neither would I.
It is good to ask. Also make sure you are getting the same style of tail shaft that you need, some are slip yoke and some are bolt on.

Re: Transmission fittment question
I got my flexplate, so that's no problem. I checked it out today. It has a slip yoke, but the guy offered me the transmission, driveshaft, and a couple other trinkets for $40. I figure being it is a long bed, I can have the driveshaft cut. My only question there is how to figure driveshaft length. By the way, the transmission looks great. It is actually rather clean to be in an old truck. Just a couple spots of grease.

Good, but those were just examples meant to show you that you should expect the unexpected.

Re: Transmission fittment question
to figure the driveshaft length you must have the trans installed. then measure it all out.
