Drive shaft / drive shafts

Post by bmerkley58 »

I would like to know what the drive shaft set up was from the factory when a short wheel base truck had a T85N overdrive transmission.
Did they use one drive shaft or did they use the two drive shaft and carrier bearing set up?

SWB trucks never had a two-piece driveshaft AFAIK. It wasn't necessary.

I have an original t85n truck and the drive shaft is a one piece but does have a slip yoke on one end. This slip yoke allows for about 3-4 inches of adjustment. Heres a pic of the yoke I was referring to.

Thanks for all the information. When I first tried to determine the drive shaft length the transmission wasn't bolted to the bellhousing and I somehow came up with a length of 72 inches center to center at the u-joints. This seemed very long and I heard you generally don't want the drive shaft to be over 60 inches long so that is why I thought maybe it required two drive shafts. Obviously I figured wrong because I re-measured and came up with 58 1/4 inches center to center at the u-joints.
