need some input on picking a cam

Post by flatblack »

hey guys, im currently building up a 1988 ford 351W fuel injected with a mass air conversion, boring 30 over with flat tops and shaving the heads .014" E7 heads ported and polished with stainless valves. porting and polishing the intake with upper plenum. headers and cold air intake as well and i will be driving on octane 91. what im trying to build is a good daily driver with power but not so much power it cant be a daily driver. i was wondering if anyone had any input on a cam, im going to be bypassing the knock sensor so i dont have to worry about it being too lumpy. im hoping theres a couple of windsor boys on the site that would have some input, please do.

I always say call the cam hotline, like Comp.

I'm surprised that none of the Windsor guys have chimed in.

I say give Crower, Crane and Lunati a call and see what they have to say, remember that the extra cubic inches will make the engine milder than the same cam in a 302 or "five oh".

I would go for something in the 210 to low 220 duration and low .500 lift. Do a little port work on the heads and if you have an automatic and don't plan on towing put a 2,500 stall in it. 650-750 cfm carb should be around 300 - 350 horse at the flywheel. There are so many other variables and requires more info on your total setup.

I have been building engines since the early 70's. I used to try to pick cams by making sure all of my components matched my desired RPM range. This seemed to work very well. You can do this too and you will probably be very happy with the results. With the advancements in today's cam grinding techniques, I don't even try anymore. I call a reputable engine builder or a camshaft company info line, give them all of the information they require, including gear ratio, tire size, weight, compression ratio, etc. and let them pick it out for me. Just a little bit of duration, one way or another can make a big difference.

The advice that you have been given on this thread is very good.
