I'm no help here, but I will tell ya this.

I cringe every time a customer mentions bringing me a Jasper engine or trans!
My van was given to me by some friends (was an ice cream van) after they stepped up to a panel van with on board generator. It's engine and trans were just less than 16 months old Jasper units and both leaked like dogs. I fixed the trans first, it was a simple fix of a complete reseal.
The engine on the other hand..... well I dropped the pan to replace the gasket and found some bad news. Rod caps pointing both ways. Ended up doing a tear down. Found 2 bottomed out head bolts (too long) that weren't holding anything and list goes on from there.

I've had their engines come in the shop and have no oil pressure to take note of @ idle only to find that there was no gasket under the oil pump. (I actually know one of their employees so it's not hard to find out what was wrong with a send back)

I now add an additional $300 to install ANY Jasper engine or trans. It's the only way I can come out after installing a unit only to have to take it back out and wait on Jasper to make it right.

Maybe I just have bad luck with them, but I know the other shops around here like them about as much as I do.

Now a few years back, I dealt with Jasper units with no issue. I think they've outgrown their desire to care.

i don't know who what or where to buy one. i can say this. the head work will cost upwards of 1000.00 if you go all out on the head. the rest of it isnt too bad as far as price and the time it would take to pay for each part of the engine work to be done. so maybe eldebrock heads might be a better choice if you don't go with a crate engine.

Man,
With those kind of prices he just shot my budget for the next 10-15 years!! I would have to get another full time job just to pay for one of those engines.

I vote rebuild what you have.

& I will 2nd it. Jasper is junk. I bought a re-manned 305 chevy from them years ago for a project truck & it lasted about a month. Took it to my machine shop & they said it had been bored out within an inch of its life & the crank had been turned down to the point of no return.

It was junk!

I'd snoop around and find a good local machine shop. I have found many (most) reman engines to be built to pretty sloppy standards. We used to call them 30,000 mile engines.
Great ideas have always encounter violent opposition from mediocre minds.

The nearest machine shop is over 50miles, Sucks in a small town of only 3,000 people.
I can have a friend take it back home with him to a shop that 70 80 year old men run! They pore babbit for model A engines, Thats how good they are.
